Ten things (smells) that make me happy
Posted by Marie Boran | Filed under Uncategorized
Lots and lots of things make me happy so I thought I’d focus on smells because I am a very scent-oriented person. So straying from the wider road of all things smile-inducing to meander along the more specific path of things wot smell nice. As Peter would probably say, it’s nice to stop and smell the roses (although they’re not in my top ten.
- Christmas trees. I like standing in the sitting room in the darkness when everyone has gone to bed and inhaling as much of the tree’s scent as possible while touching its branches (that either sounds completely sappy or a bit mental but it did die for my Christmas so I like to bond with it and let it know that I appreciate it.)
- Coffee. Yes, everyone loves the smell of coffee but I never get sick of it. Every time I open a packet of ground coffee the smell hits me like it did the first time I ever inhaled it. Mmm.
- Books. Sometimes I will go into Waterstones just to smell their books. Delicious. I also love the smell of old books, some smell exactly like the 70s and 80s, and others specifically smell pre-1960s.
- Warm concrete as it soaks up a light summer rain shower. I don’t know why I just love it.
- Firelighters. Mmmm. Squished fossilised fuel stuff. Disappointingly peat briquettes don’t pack the same punch. Coal is alright though.
- Fresh cut grass. Smells like the start of summer! Still brings me back to exam time though and the sound of a lawnmower still induces a little panic.
- New Macbook smell. It smells so different to a PC. Yummy electronic parts.
- My grandad’s pipe. He’s dead a long time but I keep the pipe with me and smell it sometimes when I’m sad or worried. It still smells as strongly of tobacco as it did when he was alive. Grandad was my second dad and a good pal rolled into one: he taught me to tie my shoelaces and let me race snails through his letterbox and gave me a pet hen (she was a bit old though). He rocked.
- The sea. The minute salty sea air hits my nose I get this intense feeling of excitement and exhilaration. Few things are as wild and beautiful as the sea.
- Fresh sweat. I know that sounds gross but you know what I mean. The smell of a guy thats just been lifting heavy things or something. Smell plays a very important role in attraction and some guys smell repulsive to me (not BO, just their natural scent) while others smell compelling. Chemical romance.
This blog post was inspired by Peter and Sinead has done a lovely post on this as well.

Ah yeah – the smell of coffee…. mmmmmm!
Sometimes I like the smell of grass too – weird I know. It just reminds me of all the times we played tackle football as youngsters and all the grass stains never came out of your pants.

Totally agree with grass, love playing football on a freshly cut pitch. A slight variation would be when the hedges along the road have been cut.
My Da used to smoke a pipe, it was so embarrassing when he would take out and start banging it on the table, take about 3 minutes to light but the smell was amazing!
Opening a nice bar of chocolate, the nestle double chocolate eggs are up there with the best on this!
Lamb cooking in the oven, covered in rosemary, mmmm.
